'Dual ownership of land will be ended'

Nov. 27: Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, Padma Kumari Aryal, Thursday said the dual ownership of land between landowners and tenants that has remained a vexing problem for a long time would be ended forever.

Speaking at a first full meeting of a commission formed to resolve various land-related problems, Minister Aryal said the government would end dual ownership of land at any cost.

“The government would facilitate in resolving dual land ownership into two parties if both the owners agree to divide it and if they cannot reach an agreement, the government would do it by intervening,” Minister Aryal said.

The government would intervene if the problem cannot be resolved by introducing a strict law, Minister Aryal said.Minister Aryal said the government had initiated a campaign to make the landless squatters the owner of the land.

“The commission’s work will be visible only when it is able to hand a red-colour land ownership certificate to the real landless quarters,” the Minister said.

The government’s campaign to hand land ownership certificates to landless squatters will be materialised only when the commission is to hand them the certificates sooner or later, Minister Aryal said. She said the government had given critical task to the commission and urged it to maintain that trust. The government has brought the concept of ‘land bank’ to utilise the uncultivated land and increase productivity from the current fiscal year.

This will be possible only from the combination of available human resources and nature, Minister Aryal said.
