Natural Resources and Means Committee of the legislative parliament has directed the government to immediately stop unauthorised plotting of arable land and devise a policy to conserve fertile land, Sunday.
The committee, which had called land reforms minister Dambar Shrestha to question on various issues Sunday, directed four concerned ministries to stop plotting of land, after the meeting.
It has directed land reforms, physical planning and works, agriculture and local development ministries to prepare within three weeks a comprehensive report on conservation of fertile arable land, according to committee secretary Ram Sharan Ghimire.
The committee has also asked the government to prepare plans on how unuthorised plotting of land can be stopped or regularised.
Land plotting for construction of houses is thriving across the country, particularly in Kathmandu valley.
Nepal does not have a clear policy on optimum use of land. In many countries including some states of India, construction in fertile is not allowed.
