Surkhet:A new trend of registering land in the name of women has gone up at Surkhet after the government provided discount on the land registration for the women.

With the new government facility, the land registration in the name of female members of the families has increased by 50 per cent in the district, the Land Revenue Office said.

According to Surkhet Land Revenue Office, the fiscal year 2066/67 witnessed around 2,119 women registering land in their name. This figure suggests that the registration of land in women’s ownership has almost doubled in comparison to the last fiscal year.

The women get 25 per cent discount for the land of the municipality and 30 per cent discount for the land of Village Development Committee while registering it in their name.

The rate of registration of land in the name of women has increased due to the awareness among the women about the government discount, the officers at the office added.

Kashi Ram Khatri, revenue officer of district, said the women of the village area have become more active in the transaction of land because of the government facility. As the villagers have low economic earning in comparison to municipality people, most of the land of the VDCs is being registered in the name of women to save registration taxes, Khatri added.

According to the data of the office, during the last year, 647 families of the municipality and 1, 472 families of VDC have registered the land in the name of their women relatives.

Some people of the district are not aware about the government discount on the land registration. Meanwhile, some women of the district started pressuring to register land in their own name.

The office claimed that along with rise in the transfer of land ownership to the women, the cases of violence against women has also decreased.
